Why I make this
कलाकृतिmeans a work of art.
That is a large phrase for something that sits at your throat, so this page is what I actually mean by it — and what I will not do to get there.
It is not a hobby.
Holding netting stitch in even tension across thousands of beads, with no frame to help you, is a technical skill that takes years to acquire and cannot be automated. Where it is done it is usually called a hobby, and that is one of the reasons it pays so badly.
The craft isn’t mine. The shapes are.
The women I work with learned this weave from their mothers and aunts. I learned it from them. What I bring is an eye for what it could become — cleaner silhouettes, fewer elements, colours chosen to sit against ordinary clothes rather than only against bridal red. Same technique, same hands, different eye.
The work is paid for as skilled work.
The arrangement is simple: they weave, I design and sell. Every piece exists because a specific person sat down and made it, and it is paid for on that basis rather than as something done at home between everything else.
Made for a Tuesday, not an occasion.
Traditional bead jewellery is often made for weddings and festivals — a few days a year, then a drawer. I wanted the same weave in something you would actually reach for on a Tuesday. Nothing about the craft is diluted to get there; the shapes are simply made for now.
Nothing sits on a shelf.
Your piece begins after you ask for it, in the shade and the length you choose. It takes about a fortnight, which is not a marketing device — it is how long the weaving takes. It also means nothing is wasted on guesses about what will sell, and no one weaves a net that nobody wanted.
Nothing here is a render.
Every photograph on this site is a piece that was actually woven, in a colour that was actually made. Where a photograph does not exist yet, the page says so and shows a drawing of the weave instead of borrowing one. A catalogue that flatters itself is no use to someone deciding what to spend money on.
